One Day at a Time: A Story of Sobriety and Transformation
February 20, 2025
“I am the luckiest woman in the world.”
This is how she begins every conversation about her journey to sobriety. It’s a phrase that carries the weight of over 50 years of hard-won recovery, countless steps forward, and moments of immense personal growth. She knows, without a doubt, that if she hadn’t made the decision to get sober, she would not be here today.

It all started on February 25, 1974, when she took the first step toward reclaiming her life. For years, she drank heavily—two 1/5th bottles of whiskey a day—yet she somehow managed to work, care for her family, and function in the world. But inside, she was spiraling. She knew she was on the brink of losing everything, including her own life.
One fateful day, she reached out to Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). Someone came to pick her up and take her to a meeting. She had no idea that this meeting would be the turning point. She was welcomed with open arms by strangers who understood her struggles, and she was told in no uncertain terms: if you want your life to change, you have to stop drinking. On the ride home, something shifted inside her. Without fully understanding how, she made the decision to quit. And from that moment on, she never looked back.
Though her decision to stop drinking was a monumental one, the road to recovery wasn’t over. She began attending AA meetings regularly, reading the AA book, and working the 12 steps. She got a sponsor, participated in speaker meetings, and found a new sense of purpose in helping others navigate their own recovery.
But recovery was more than just quitting alcohol. At the time, her husband was also an alcoholic, but he wasn’t ready to make the same choice. She faced a tough decision: to stay or to leave. She knew that if she stayed, her own recovery would be compromised, and their young daughter would be affected. So, she left. With no place to go, she and her daughter sought refuge at a women’s shelter.
After a month and a half, her husband made the choice to quit drinking as well, and they reconciled. His newfound clarity gave him the drive to start his own business, which eventually became successful. It was a major turning point in their lives.
Three years into sobriety, she made another life-changing decision. A three-pack-a-day smoking habit had kept its grip on her for years, but she knew that in order to live fully, she had to let it go. And so, she did. Cold turkey. She hasn’t smoked a single cigarette since.
Even after overcoming alcohol and cigarettes, another addiction emerged: food. Her once slender body began to change, and the struggle with weight became a new battle. But she continued to work on herself. She walked every day, starting with just a few blocks, but determined to keep going. Slowly, her fitness improved, and she shed the weight. Her transformation went beyond just physical health—her spirit was stronger too.
With a renewed sense of self, she opened a 12-step gift shop, focused on supporting others in recovery. It was the first of its kind in her area—a place where people could find sobriety medallions, jewelry, and other recovery-related gifts. This was more than just a business; it was a way to encourage others to stay on the path of recovery, one day at a time.
When her daughter moved away and had children, she followed. Though she knew no one in the new city, she immediately felt at home in the local AA community. She continued her recovery journey, maintaining her sobriety, never picking up another cigarette, and being mindful of her health.
Today, over 50 years after that life-changing decision, she is still an active member of AA. She continues to share her story with others, to sponsor those in need, and to help anyone who is ready to take that first step toward recovery. Her message remains the same: it can be done—One Day at a Time.
— Her journey shows that true transformation isn’t about perfection; it’s about persistence. One step at a time, she chose recovery, health, and kindness—not just for herself, but for everyone around her. She continues to inspire those who are struggling, proving that even after decades, change is always possible.
She is, without a doubt, a living example of what it means to stay legendary—to face challenges head-on, rise above them, and lift others along the way.
Your story, no matter where you are on your journey, has the power to inspire others. It’s not about how you start, but how you keep going. Keep pushing. Keep growing.
